Winter Freeriding in the Austrian Alps

Winter Mountain Biking, aka Snowbiking, with ::appi.at in the region around Innsbruck, Austria

The Austrian Alps of Tirol have a vast network of winter terrain suitable for mountain biking.  No longer do mountain bikers have to simply endure the long winter in anticipation of clear trails next spring.  With the right equipment (Ice Spiker Pro from Schwalbe), some warm clothes, and expert knowledge a whole new world of cycling opens up.  Nearly every option is available for the ascent when going with Markus "Appi" Apperle from ::appi.at.  Lift, bus, shuttle, hiking and of course riding are all possibilities.

Hotels like the Alpenrose Hotel in Kühtai are already recognizing the potential of growth in this sport.  They are catering to the riders in an effort to combine snowbiking with other winter sports for tourists.  It is often the case that when the snow quality is not ideal for skiing, it is most ideal for freeride mountain biking.  For example, icy slopes that can be miserable on skis become pure ridable excitement on spiked winter tires.  If the fingers ever do get cold, there are always nice huts along the way like Birgitz Alm to hang the helmets while you get some hot food and drink (or maybe a cold beer!).

A guide is imperative for those unfamiliar with the options in Tirol.  Please visit the Mountain Bike Guide Website.
